A recital by Bohumil Bondarenko and Daniel Matejči at the Celetná Salon
Bohumil Bondarenko (born 2000) studied the viola at the Conservatoire in České Budějovice under his mother, Larisa Kolcová, and the piano under Dinara Suleymanova. This year, he completed his Master’s degree in viola performance under Prof. Jan Pěruška at the Faculty of Music of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He furthered his education through semester-long studies at music universities in Vienna under Prof. Wolfgang Klose and in Graz under Prof. Ori Kama. At the Oskar Nedbal International Viola Competition, he won the prize for the best Czech participant. As a violist, he has performed at the Berlin Philharmonic’s Lunchkonzert and the Smetana’s Litomyšl Festival, and has given solo recitals with both the South Bohemian and North Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestras. He is dedicated to chamber music as the violist in Suk’s String Quartet (with Daniel Matejča, Natálie Toperczerová and Jakub William Gráf), which won first prize at the Talents for Europe competition in 2022 and has performed at the Prague Spring Festival, the Concentus Moraviae Festival and the Hamburg Kammermusikfest International. He is a graduate of the Tomáš Jamník Academy of Chamber Music and has performed alongside artists such as Jan Fišer, Niklas Liepe and Irvin Venyš. He is a member of the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Daniel Matejča (*2005) has been playing the violin since the age of four; since the age of five, he has been a pupil of Prof. Ivan Štraus, under whose tutelage he also completed his Master’s degree this year at the Faculty of Music of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He has won a number of prestigious prizes, including first prizes at the Josef Muzika Competition, the Kocian Violin Competition, the ‘Jugend musiziert’ competition in Halle and the Telemann Competition in Poznań, the Zlatý oříšek prize and second prize at Concertino Praga in the solo performance category (2020), where he performed Prokofiev’s concerto with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Rudolfinum. He won Virtuosos V4+ (2021), Eurovision Young Musicians (2022) and, together with pianist Jan Schulmeister, the chamber music category at Concertino Praga (2023). In 2024, at the age of eighteen, he was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and received the Josef Hlávka Award. He takes part in international courses and masterclasses (including with Jiří Vodička, Christian Tetzlaff and Augustin Hadelich), and performs throughout Europe and beyond; in 2025, he made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic. He records for Supraphon: his album of E. Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas (2023) became the best-selling classical CD in the Czech Republic and garnered acclaim from the international press. Last year, he released an album of works by Suk, Martinů and Fišer with Jan Schulmeister; his latest recording features the violin concertos by Shostakovich and Prokofiev with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tomáš Netopil.
